Dual Diagnosis Training

Training workshops are conducted in the areas of dual diagnosis; alcohol & other drugs and concurrent mental health issues.
1 Day Workshop - Introduction
Topics covered include:

  • Pharmacology of drugs (drugs & their effects)
  • The Cycle of Addiction
  • The Stages of Change
  • The Grief Cycle & Anger / Hatred



2 Day Workshop - Advanced
This workshop covers all the key knowledge required to conduct a brief intervention for clients presenting with substance abuse issues and / or mental health problems (ie: dual diagnosis). Key knowledge components include:

  • Holistic Intervention and the public health model, (based on the Ottawa Charter; incorporating bio-psycho-social-spiritual dynamics)
  • Understanding the underlying emotional & psychological issues behind addictions
  • Understanding the neurophysiology / psychology of addictions and human development
  • Psychopharmacology
  • The Cycle of Addiction
  • The Stages of Change
  • The Grief Cycle & Anger / Hatred
  • Conducting a Brief Intervention



Day 2

  • How to work with treatment resistant clients; including precontemplators
  • Working with people with mental health issues (particularly personality disorders)
  • Motivational interviewing; theory and practice.



Gap Training
Accreditation is offered for the 2 Nationally Accredited modules below that participants complete as part of their gap training during the 2 Day Advanced Workshop:

  • CHCAOD2C - Orientation to the alcohol and other drugs work - EPBC
  • CHCCS403A - Provide brief intervention – EPEC



Participants can also carry these 2 modules into the full RPL course described on the next page.
